Julia Swarbrick

Where We're At...

Julia is a painter and printmaker exploring local landscapes, natural history, folk tales and fables alongside personal memories. She works primarily with etching and lithography because they come closest to representing the drawn mark which she explores as a foundation for both prints and paintings. Concertina sketchbooks are used to help bring together disparate threads of the work and hint at a narrative.

Recurring features are dolls, teddy bears and other reclaimed children’s toys. They are a substitute for the human and work well as models given the constraints of time, budget and the recent lockdown. Many of the toys used are found objects which are either thrown away or literally abandoned in the street.
